My friends got me a pair of hockey skates for my birthday. Today I gave them their inaugural spin at a public skate at San Jose Ice. On a Sunday afternoon. In December. Oh man, it was crowded. It was all about dodging the little kids and the completely unpredictable wobbling teenagers. Practice crossovers or stopping or going backwards? HA! I have accumulated gloves & shin guards; the rest of the hockey gear will follow slowly.

Thing I learned today: ice rinks are cold.

Today I bench pressed up to 105#, looking for the magic moment when my shoulders start to do the wrong thing. I have lost a ton of strength during these months of no benching, so I’m going to have to work up again. But my formerly-injured shoulder did not hurt at all or twinge or call attention to itself in any way, so I think I’m good to go.

The other thing I did was spend an hour going around in circles at San Jose Ice. First time on skates in 30 years; first time ever on hockey skates. I did just fine! All that time squatting pays off in this sport, as far as I can tell. The friend who dragged me there put me into shin guards and gloves and taught me how to fall at speed. Well, what pathetic speeds I can reach at the moment.
